The Perfect Matcha Latte

About one year ago I let go of my morning cup of Jo. Coffee was a sacred part of my day - a time for me to sit in the silence of the early stillness. Don't have anything against coffee. It's delicious and has incredible medicinal powers. But what I was finding was that the caffeine was not serving me. Rather then start my day calm, it was making me jittery, anxious, and on edge. So, we parted ways. It's made all the difference.


So what do I start my mornings with now? Either a warm mug of water with lemon juice to get my digestive system started or a cup of relaxing camomile tea with doTERRA lavender essential oil. But every once in a while I need a pick me up so I fix up the perfect Matcha Latte.


Matcha comes from green tea bushes that grow incredibly bright just by taking rest in the shade. They hold powerful nutrients within their leaves and when ground into a fine powder. Unlike other green teas, we drink the whole leaf, rather than infusing and discarding. So we are getting every single bit of health benefits this beautiful Japanese has to offer.


Why do we drink it? There are more reasons than we can count but here are just a few:

  1. Contains antioxidants: Brings stability to the body so that it can ward off harmful free radicals which cause chronic diseases and damage to cells.

  2. Protects the liver: Flushes out toxins and processes nutrients. Matcha could prevent the risk of liver disease and damage.

  3. Enhances brain function: Consuming matcha could improve memory and attention. It also contains L-theanine which promotes alertness and helps to avoid caffeine crashes. It can also reduce stress levels and promote relaxation.

  4. Prevents heart disease: Can reduce bad cholesterol, keeping the heart healthy

  5. Prevents cancer: Matcha is high in a catechin, also known by EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). It is believed that this phenol/antioxidant has cancer-fighting effects that supports the body against cancer.


Enjoy this bright green and smooth green tea, providing you with a slightly sweet taste.


Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons matcha powder

  • 1 tablespoon hot water

  • 2 teaspoons maple syrup, no-bee honey, agave syrup or desired sweetener

  • 3/4 cup hot plant based milk (recommended: oat or coconut milk)


Preparation:

  1. Sift the matcha powder into a mug.

  2. Boil plant based milk to 175 degrees and pour into mug.

  3. Whisk with a small whisk or a matcha whisk (using a M shape movement)

  4. Add the water and continue to whisk till there's no lumps and a froth is created

  5. Finally add your desired vegan sweetener.

  6. Sprinkle the top with a little bit of matcha powder (optional)
